Job Description: 

Our client is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Cloud Native Products (CNP) team. Our team delivers core platform building blocks such as Database-as-a-Service (Aurora Postgres, DynamoDB, MongoDB, Aurora Serverless, In-Memory DB), enterprise notifications (SES, SNS, SQS), object storage (S3), and workflow orchestration with Temporal. These products enable Grainger developers to build and scale applications faster, securely, and with improved reliability and cost efficiency.

As a Lead Engineer, you will work closely with other Software Engineers, Architects, and Technical Product Managers to execute on product roadmaps and backlog priorities. You will provide technical guidance, mentor engineers, and ensure best practices are applied across design, coding, testing, and cloud deployments. You will report to an Engineering Manager and play a key role in shaping our “Platform as a Product” strategy.

You Will:

  • Deploy working software to production early and often using containerized deployments, infrastructure as code, pipeline as code, and feature flagging techniques.
  • Use XP engineering practices like pair programming, TDD, refactoring and more to ensure we’re writing high-quality software in a sustainable way.
  • Write automated tests using modern tools (e.g., pytest, tox, jest, or pact).
  • Mentor junior engineers
  • Collaborate with your Tech Lead, Engineering Manager, Product Manager, and UX to make sure requirements are clear and we’re taking the best technical approaches.
  • Work in a collaborative team environment with a focus on continuous improvement and learning.

You Have:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience in computer science or a related field
  • 5+ years experience as a Software Engineer required
  • Experience deploying and operating software in the public cloud (AWS strongly preferred)
  • Proficient in Python and comfortable with other modern languages
  • Hands-on experience with Terraform, Docker, and/or CloudFormation for Infrastructure as Code
  • Familiarity with AWS account foundations (IAM, networking, security best practices)
  • Strong background in designing and operating distributed systems (databases, messaging, storage)
  • Proven experience mentoring engineers and driving technical decisions across a team
  • Experience with event-driven and messaging systems (SNS, SQS, Kafka, or similar)
  • Strong understanding of CI/CD pipelines, GitOps, and automated delivery practices
  • Knowledge of observability tooling (CloudWatch, Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, or equivalent)
  • Familiarity with multi-region architectures and resilience strategies

Salary/Rate: $30-$40/HR (depends on experience level). This is a contract position with candidates expected to work 40 hours/ week.
