Job Description:

Principal Controls & Automation Engineer
Location: Houston, TX (Onsite) | Reports To: VP, Manufacturing & Supply Chain | Contract-to-Hire

Position Summary

This is a unique full-lifecycle opportunity to shape the control and automation architecture of new manufacturing facilities and continue to remain closely involved with those systems as they evolve in the operating plant. Unlike a traditional project controls role that ends at commissioning, or an operations automation role that inherits systems designed by others, this position provides the opportunity to design the system, bring it into operation, learn from real plant performance, and continuously improve and reinvent it.

The Principal Controls & Automation Engineer is the company's senior technical authority for process controls, automation, instrumentation, and industrial control systems across its manufacturing and processing operations.

The role is responsible for establishing the company's controls and automation architecture from early process development through FEED, detailed engineering, commissioning, and startup, and for continuously improving, optimizing, and innovating the automation and control systems of operating facilities. This includes identifying opportunities to increase process stability, throughput, product quality, reliability, safety, energy efficiency, and operational intelligence through improved controls, advanced automation, instrumentation, and data-driven technologies.

The role is both strategic and hands-on, with responsibility for control philosophy, instrumentation, DCS/PLC architecture, alarms, interlocks, sequencing, data acquisition, advanced process control, automation optimization, FAT/SAT, commissioning, and long-term automation standards. The role is also expected to identify and implement next-generation controls and automation technologies as the company's manufacturing capabilities evolve.

Core Responsibilities

  • Controls & Automation Architecture: Establish scalable company-wide standards for DCS, PLC, SCADA, HMI, historians, instrumentation, industrial networks, and safety systems, while continuously evaluating new technologies and architectures that can improve plant performance.
  • Process Control & Instrumentation: Develop control philosophies, control strategies, instrumentation requirements, control loops, sequencing, alarms, interlocks, and cause-and-effect logic, including identification and management of critical process parameters.
  • Process & FEED Integration: Work with Process Engineering from technology development through FEED and detailed engineering; translate process requirements into controls requirements and review EPC/EPCM designs, equipment packages, and control strategies.
  • Advanced Control & Automation: Develop and implement advanced process control, automated sequencing, model-based control, optimization, and intelligent automation, including integration of process models, analytical systems, AI, and digital twins where they provide meaningful operational value.
  • Manufacturing Automation & Continuous Improvement: Continuously identify, develop, and implement opportunities to improve and innovate the company's manufacturing controls and automation systems. Use operating data, process knowledge, emerging technologies, and operator feedback to improve process stability, throughput, product quality, reliability, safety, energy efficiency, and labor productivity.
  • Commissioning, Startup & Plant Optimization: Lead controls activities through FAT/SAT, commissioning, startup, and performance testing; troubleshoot control systems and support ongoing process optimization, debottlenecking, reliability improvement, and automation upgrades.
  • Process Safety & Reliability: Define alarms, trips, permissives, interlocks, and safety-system interfaces; support HAZOP/LOPA and establish standards for alarm management, system availability, redundancy, fail-safe operation, and lifecycle reliability.
  • OT Cybersecurity & Digital Integration: Partner with Software & Cybersecurity to secure industrial control systems and integrate plant controls with historians, manufacturing data platforms, engineering models, AI systems, and other digital technologies without compromising control-system integrity.
  • EPC/EPCM & Vendor Management: Provide technical direction to EPC/EPCM firms, controls integrators, instrumentation vendors, and equipment suppliers; review and approve key controls engineering deliverables and ensure external systems conform to company standards.
  • Operational Standards, Innovation & Lifecycle Management: Maintain company-wide controls and automation standards while establishing a continuous-improvement roadmap for the company's manufacturing automation capabilities. Evaluate emerging technologies, prioritize automation investments, and manage system modifications, upgrades, obsolescence, and long-term lifecycle requirements.
  • Technical Authority: Retain owner-side technical authority over the company's controls and automation architecture and ensure systems are designed and evolved around actual process and operating requirements, rather than simply replicating vendor or EPC standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Automation Engineering, or related discipline.
  • 15+ years of industrial controls, automation, and instrumentation experience, preferably in minerals processing, metallurgy, specialty chemicals, advanced materials, or similarly complex process industries.
  • Deep experience with DCS and PLC systems and industrial instrumentation.
  • Experience developing control philosophies, P&IDs, cause-and-effect matrices, alarm strategies, sequencing, interlocks, and functional specifications.
  • Experience leading controls engineering through FEED, EPC/EPCM, FAT/SAT, commissioning, startup, and operations.
  • Strong understanding of process dynamics and the interaction between process design and control-system design.
  • Experience with high-temperature, solids-handling, slurry, hydrometallurgical, chemical, or similarly challenging process systems strongly preferred.
  • Experience with industrial communications, historians, SCADA/HMI, industrial networks, and OT cybersecurity.
  • Experience integrating online analyzers, PAT, advanced control, or model-based optimization is desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to technically direct EPC/EPCM firms and controls-system vendors.

Pay rate: $85-105/hr. This is a contract-to-hire position (3 months to permanent), onsite in Houston, TX. Candidates must be US Citizens or Green Card holders.
