Job Description:
Our client is seeking a Senior Dynamics 365 Business Central Implementation Consultant to join their dynamic team. Our client engaging a consultant to implement Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central for a hardware VAR division of our company (business model similar to CDW). The division currently uses Activate to push orders into QuickBooks, with equipment drop-shipped through a distributor/partner network. We are moving order processing onto Business Central.
CRM (Dynamics 365 Sales, used for quoting) is already staffed and is not part of this engagement. This request covers the Business Central implementation only, across five areas of work described below.
Our suppliers/distributors already have their own integration endpoints built to connect into Business Central-style backends, so the consultant does not need to build distributor-side EDI or punchout infrastructure from scratch — the work is integrating against those existing hooks.
Separately, this division’s Business Central tenant needs to feed a consolidated corporate roll-up sitting in a different Business Central tenant (a separate Microsoft Entra tenant, same company). That integration is in scope for this engagement as well.
Scope of Work:
1. Inventory Setup
Configure Business Central’s inventory module to support a drop-ship, pass-through fulfillment model (little to no warehoused stock): - Item cards, non-stock/catalog items, item categories, units of measure - Vendor setup, vendor item cross-references, vendor catalogs - Costing method configuration appropriate for a drop-ship/pass-through model - Dimension setup for reporting by product line, distributor, or sales rep
2. Sales Order Processing
Configure Business Central’s sales and purchasing modules so orders flow correctly from quote to fulfillment: - Sales order processing tied to purchase orders (special order / drop-ship order types) - Native drop-shipment functionality (order-to-order linking between sales and purchase orders) - Purchase order configuration and integration against existing supplier API endpoints, so orders placed in Business Central are automatically transmitted to the correct supplier and order confirmations/tracking flow back in - Error handling and reconciliation logic for failed order transmissions, partial shipments, and price/cost mismatches between supplier confirmations and the original purchase order
3. Quote Intake from CRM
Configure the receiving side of the quote-to-order handoff from Dynamics 365 Sales (CRM) into Business Central: - Integration to receive an approved quote from CRM and create the corresponding Business Central sales order - Product/price catalog alignment between CRM and Business Central item numbers, so quotes map cleanly to sellable items without manual re-entry - Validation logic to handle quote-to-order exceptions (e.g., pricing mismatches, discontinued items, missing vendor cross-references)
4. GL Migration from QuickBooks
Migrate the division’s general ledger and supporting financial data from QuickBooks into Business Central: - Chart of accounts mapping and, where needed, restructuring using Business Central’s dimension-based approach - Historical transaction strategy: what is imported as transaction-level detail versus summarized opening balances - Migration of open AR/AP, open purchase orders, and open sales orders — important here given orders may be in flight at cutover - Data cleansing (deduplication, missing account numbers, tax jurisdiction setup) - Reconciliation: trial balance tie-out between QuickBooks and Business Central post-migration
5. BC Tenant-to-BC Tenant Integration (Corporate Roll-Up)
Connect this division’s Business Central tenant to the corporate Business Central tenant (a separate Microsoft Entra tenant) so corporate can consolidate financials: - Configuration of Business Central’s native Consolidation feature, using the API-based data import method (required for cross-tenant scenarios) - Microsoft Entra app registration and OAuth 2.0 authentication setup in the division’s tenant, including admin consent, so the corporate tenant can pull data securely - Chart of accounts mapping between the division and corporate consolidated company — simplified here since both use a matching chart of accounts - Automation of the roll-up (job queue entry or Power Automate flow) so corporate can run consolidation on a schedule rather than a manual trigger - Validation that consolidated balances tie out to the division’s trial balance after each run
6. Core Financial & Master Data Setup (Full Migration Scope)
A full migration involves more than inventory, orders, and the GL balances themselves — the following master data and financial infrastructure must also be set up and migrated for Business Central to function day-to-day. We are calling this out explicitly so the recruiter sources someone with genuine migration experience, not just implementation/configuration experience:
If any of these are skipped or rushed, downstream issues typically show up in Accounts Payable (vendors not paid correctly, missing 1099s) or in incorrect GL postings from missing/misconfigured posting groups — both of which are expensive to unwind after go-live.
Required Skill Set:
Salary/Rate: $90-$120/HR (depends on experience level). This is a contract position with candidates expected to work 40 hours/ week.
