Job Description:

Our client is seeking an experienced System21 RPG Developer with strong hands-on experience developing, enhancing, and supporting applications within the System21 ERP environment. You'll be a core member of the ERP Engineering team, driving full-lifecycle implementations of technology-enabled business processes that make our internal operations and customer service more effective. You'll bring deep expertise in IBM iSeries (AS/400), RPG development, and the System21 ERP platform — with particular strength in the System21 Finance module — and combine that technical depth with genuine passion for improving workflows, data, and user experience.

This role blends technical leadership with hands-on development. You'll design, enhance, and support enterprise applications that power critical business operations, while also providing architectural direction to keep the System21 environment scalable, well-integrated, and built for the long term. The ideal candidate has a proven track record of modernizing legacy RPG-based ERP solutions and enjoys mentoring others along the way.

What You'll Do

  • Help sustain a culture of continuous improvement within the ERP Engineering team, keeping ERP and related systems agile and aligned with evolving business objectives
  • Deconstruct, document, and maintain in-house-built applications, working with Business Analysts on migration and consolidation strategies
  • Perform complex data transformations, migrations, and mass changes for implementations, upgrades, and user requests, in line with change control standards
  • Translate requirements for both simple and complex transactional processes into technical solutions that meet or exceed company standards and business needs
  • Help shape the standards and architecture of enterprise systems
  • Communicate status, deliverables, and expectations clearly to teammates and to Director- and Manager-level stakeholders
  • Stay closely attuned to business operations and strategic goals to better serve every department on the ERP platform
  • Build strong relationships across the team, with an emphasis on mentorship
  • Develop and maintain high-quality integration interfaces using the Boomi iPaaS, supporting high availability, data integrity, and measurable performance
  • Apply advanced configuration, process automation, and implementation practices in an agile environment
  • Represent externally, in partnership with the ERP and Financial Systems Center of Excellence, showcasing our solutions to the broader ERP community and at industry conferences
  • Take on other duties as needed

What You Bring

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Systems, Computer Science, or a related field — or equivalent business, financial, or technical experience
  • 8+ years of IBM iSeries RPG development experience, ideally including the IBM System21 ERP platform
  • 8+ years as a Programmer Analyst in ERP, financial, or transactional enterprise business systems, preferably in a manufacturing or distribution environment

Skills & Abilities

  • Extensive experience with the IBM iSeries platform, DB2, CLP, Sequel Viewpoint, and GoAnywhere
  • Proven ability to lead the design, development, and enhancement of applications on the IBM System21 ERP platform using RPG (RPG III/IV/ILE, RPG Free), CL, and SQL
  • Familiarity with development tools and source control systems such as Aldon Community Manager
  • Experience serving as a solution architect, translating business requirements into scalable technical solutions
  • Strong track record collaborating with business stakeholders and cross-functional IT teams to define specifications and deliver quality solutions
  • Comfort providing technical oversight and mentorship to other developers
  • Experience modernizing System21 applications through modularization, API development, and external system integration
  • Skilled at troubleshooting, optimizing, and maintaining RPG-based applications for performance, reliability, and compliance
  • Deep understanding of System21 ERP modules (Finance, Distribution, Manufacturing, and related areas)
  • Strong grasp of ERP data structures, business processes, and integration points
  • Hands-on experience with system performance tuning and debugging
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills

Salary/Rate: $75-$90/HR (depends on experience level). This is a contract position with candidates expected to work 40 hours/ week.

About Us

Peterson Technology Partners (PTP) is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to creating a transparent, inclusive, and human-centered hiring experience.

For more than 28 years, PTP has operated as one of the top IT staffing and recruiting firms in the USA—built on trust, long-term partnerships, and technical excellence.

Based in the Chicago suburb of Park Ridge, IL, our team of more than 500 employees and consultants is dedicated to:

  • Helping every client make the best hiring decisions possible
  • Matching professionals with the right IT jobs and career opportunities

As part of that commitment, we believe in providing clear information about how our hiring technologies work and how your data is used. The following section outlines our AI-assisted interview process and your rights as a candidate.

AI-Assisted Interview Experience (Pete & Gabi – Rebecca):

To provide a consistent, fair, and flexible experience for all candidates, we use AI-assisted tools to support parts of the interview process. This includes our proprietary AI platform Pete & Gabi, which includes AI recruiter Rebecca.

These AI hiring tools help us:

  • Conduct recorded video interviews
  • Transcribe interviews
  • Summarize candidate responses
  • Generate job-related insights
  • Streamline communication and scheduling

Please note that:

  • The AI does NOT make hiring decisions; all decisions are made by our human recruiters, hiring managers, or client partners.
  • The AI does not evaluate facial expressions, emotions, or physical traits; it is used only to support fairness, consistency, and efficiency.

If you prefer a non-AI interview format, we will gladly provide an alternative.

Technical or Case Interviews (Role-Dependent):

When applying for certain tech jobs, you may participate in:

  • A technical interview
  • A coding challenge
  • A case study
  • A client-specific assessment

We will always explain what to expect in advance so you can prepare with confidence.

Human Review & Selection: +

Every candidate’s profile—including interviews, conversations, and assessments—is reviewed by experienced recruiters and hiring leaders.

AI insights may assist with organization and evaluation, but final decisions are always human-driven.

Your Rights as a Candidate: +

At PTP, every candidate has the right to:

  • Request a non-AI interview path
  • Ask how your data is being used
  • Request access to transcripts or interview recordings
  • Request deletion of your AI-recorded interview
  • Receive clear, timely communication

Our goal is to ensure you feel respected, informed, and supported throughout your experience.

Our Commitment: +

For more than 28 years, PTP has focused on putting people first—candidates, consultants, employees, and clients.

We’re committed to a hiring process that is:

  • Transparent
  • Compliant
  • Equitable
  • Powered by innovative technology that enhances—not replaces—human judgment

Welcome to the future of hiring at Peterson Technology Partners.

We’re excited to learn more about you.
