Job Description:

Our client is seeking an Technical Product Manager to join their team. The Technical Product Manager will own the product strategy, roadmap, technical operations, and day-to-day health of the Firm’s Retool platform. This role will translate business needs into technical solutions, manage the product backlog, oversee third-party vendors, and ensure platform enhancements meet architecture, security, compliance, and data governance standards.

The ideal candidate will have 5+ years of technical product management or product ownership experience, hands-on experience with Retool or similar low-code platforms, strong knowledge of APIs, SQL, data flows, and cloud technologies, and experience managing technical vendors. The role also requires the ability to configure, troubleshoot, and make routine changes within Retool while partnering with business and technical teams to deliver scalable solutions and continuously improve platform performance.

Position Overview:

  • The position is responsible for both the product management and technical operations of the Firm's Retool platform. This includes defining product roadmap, and delivery priorities while also ensuring the platform's day-to-day health, stability, security, performance, and operational effectiveness. The role serves as the primary oversight of third-party consultants and service providers currently responsible for development, support, and administration activities.
  • This role is accountable for translating business requirements into technical solutions, managing and prioritizing the product backlog, and ensuring that all platform enhancements align with the Firm's architecture, security, compliance, and data governance standards. Equally, the role is responsible for operational governance, release coordination, incident management, platform maintenance, vendor performance, and continuous service improvement. The Technical Product Manager partners closely with business stakeholders, platform architects, Security, Infrastructure, Risk, and Operations teams to deliver scalable, well-governed solutions that improve data accessibility, automation, and business process efficiency across the organization.
  • The ideal candidate combines strong product management capabilities with hands-on operational and technical expertise. This individual is expected to balance strategic planning and roadmap management with operational execution, ensuring the platform remains reliable, secure, and aligned to business priorities. The role spans the full product lifecycle, including demand intake, requirements gathering, prioritization, solution design review, vendor management, testing oversight, deployment coordination, operational support, service monitoring, and platform optimization.
  • This role also requires sufficient hands-on technical capability to operate independently and intervene directly when needed. The Technical Product Manager should be comfortable working within Retool to configure applications, build and modify workflows and queries, troubleshoot issues, support platform upgrades, monitor integrations, and perform light development and administrative activities. While not a full-stack engineering role, the position requires enough technical depth to reduce dependence on third-party resources for routine platform support, administration, and maintenance activities.
  • The role requires experience managing technical vendors or service providers, a solid understanding of API-based integrations, low-code/no-code application platforms (Retool preferred), and modern agile delivery methodologies. The Technical Product Manager is also expected to leverage AI-powered tools to accelerate roadmap planning, requirements documentation, and quality assurance activities, while identifying opportunities for the Firm to reduce reliance on external vendors over time.

Essential Functions:

Product Strategy & Roadmap:

  • Define and maintain the Retool platform roadmap in alignment with business priorities and technical feasibility.
  • Own and prioritize the product backlog across business units requesting new apps, integrations, and workflow automations.
  • Develop business cases and success metrics for proposed platform initiatives.

Vendor & Delivery Oversight:

  • Serve as the primary internal point of contact for third-party consultants and service providers delivering Retool development work.
  • Review and approve vendor-proposed technical designs, scope, and delivery timelines.
  • Monitor vendor performance against quality, cost, and schedule commitments.
  • Manage the long-term transition toward increased internal ownership of platform development.

Hands-On Retool Configuration & Development:

  • Configure and maintain Retool apps, including basic queries, workflows, permissions, and UI components.
  • Perform light development and troubleshooting directly within Retool to resolve issues or make routine changes without relying on third-party resources.
  • Support planning, testing, and execution of Retool platform upgrades and version changes.
  • Step in as a hands-on technical resource when needed to keep app development and support moving, without requiring heavy full-stack engineering depth.

Requirements & Delivery Management:

  • Translate business requirements into detailed technical requirements and user stories for development teams, whether internal or vendor-based.
  • Make trade-off decisions between scope, cost, risk, and delivery timelines.
  • Coordinate release planning, testing, and deployment activities.

Architecture & Integration Oversight:

  • Understand and evaluate system architecture, integrations, APIs, data models, and technical dependencies within the Retool platform.
  • Partner with architects, Security, and Risk to ensure vendor-delivered solutions meet Firm standards.
  • Identify and manage technical risks, dependencies, and scalability concerns.

Collaboration & Support:

  • Work closely with business stakeholders across Business Development, Marketing, and Practice Groups to gather requirements and translate them into actionable initiatives.
  • Prepare technical documentation, architecture diagrams, and operational procedures.
  • Participate in and lead sprint planning, standups, and agile ceremonies.
  • Serve as the escalation point for operational or systematic issues affecting the Retool platform, coordinating resolution with vendor resources as needed.
  • Implement and enforce risk policies and standards, security policies and standards, and best practices across the platform.

Qualifications:

Education, Work Experience, Skills

  • BA/BS in computer science, related field, or equivalent experience, with 5+ years' experience in technical product management, product ownership, or a related technical delivery role.
  • 2+ years' experience managing or overseeing third-party vendors, consultants, or managed service providers.
  • Experience with low-code/no-code application platforms (Retool preferred), including basic hands-on configuration or development.
  • This role does not require deep, full-stack software engineering expertise, but does require enough technical comfort to configure, troubleshoot, and make routine changes directly within Retool when needed.
  • Proactive in escalating issues and pulling in support from other technical experts as required.
  • Embrace a nimble mindset and adapt quickly to changing requirements and goals in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Must be a self-starter and able to work independently with little direction/supervision.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.

Technical Skills:

  • Working technical proficiency in Retool, including:
  • Building and configuring apps, queries, and workflows
  • Basic scripting/light development within Retool (e.g., JavaScript transformers, REST/SQL queries)
  • Supporting and testing platform upgrades and version changes

Strong understanding of:

  • API-based integrations
  • Data modeling and data flows
  • Cloud architecture (Microsoft Azure preferred)
  • Relational databases
  • Ability to read and evaluate technical designs and architecture diagrams produced by development teams.
  • Familiarity with Agile/Scrum delivery methodologies.

Vendor & Delivery Management:

Hands-on experience with:

  • Managing statements of work, deliverables, and vendor performance
  • Backlog and roadmap tools (e.g., Azure DevOps, Jira)
  • Release and change management processes

Additional Requirements:

  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating across technical and business teams.
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with:

  • Retool platform administration or development
  • Salesforce, ServiceNow, or similar enterprise platforms
  • Contract and vendor negotiation
  • Microsoft Azure DevOps
  • Building internal development capabilities to reduce reliance on external vendors
  • Experience working in large enterprise environments.

Work Environment:

  • A high-speed internet connection is required to connect to systems.

Salary/Rate: $70-$90/HR (depends on experience level). This is a contract position with candidates expected to work 40 hours/ week.
